Recycled Work Art
Artists continue to redefine public art. Environmental Artists are at the cutting edge of this redefinition. This environmental art contest is designed to increase awareness of the City's recycling program, as well as the awareness of art. The goal is to promote environmental art to all, while learning about the recycling programs in the City of Santa Clarita. View the entry form PDF Document.

Go Green Transit
The first annual "GO GREEN Santa Clarita Art Contest" winners have been decided! Sharon Lee (Rio Norte Junior HS), Ina Chang (Rio Norte Junior HS), Riley Haycock (Canyon HS), and Taylor Porvin (West Ranch HS) will each receive cash prizes and complimentary Santa Clarita Transit fare. All winning artwork will be displayed at the Grand Finale Art Exhibit at the City’s Earth/Arbor Festival on April 17, as well as the City’s Transit Maintenance Facility.

Earth Arbor DayZERO WASTE
We all know how to “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” In 2006, City residents and businesses were responsible for diverting 54% of the solid waste generated away from landfills through recycling and reuse. While we are definitely making progress, we are now embarking on a new challenge, the “zero waste” concept. Wasting resources is inefficient and that efficient use of our natural resources is what we should work to achieve. It requires that we maximize our existing recycling and reuse efforts, while ensuring that products are designed for the environment and have the potential to be repaired, reused, or recycled.

At the Earth Arbor Day event, the City of Santa Clarita will be changing it from a zero waste concept to a zero waste reality! That’s right, there will be no waste receptacles at the event. Instead, the City of Santa Clarita’s franchised commercial solid waste services provider, Burrtec Waste Industries, will be providing only recycle and compost bins. A group of volunteers from the Boys and Girls Club will guide and educate event participants on which items belong in the recycle or compost bins. Additionally, the City worked with the vendors at the event to ensure that all of their products do not generate any waste and can be reused, recycled, or composted.

Enjoy riding your bike!
Arrive early at Newhall Park and participate in one of two bicycle rides presented by Newhall Bicycle Company. A road ride, covering 40 miles, and the Family Ride, covering 10 miles, will leave Newhall Park at 9:00 am. Bring your bike into Newhall Bicycle Company on Main Street for a pre-ride service check. Once you arrive back in Newhall Park, you will be able to lock up your bike racks available at the park. Please remember to wear your helmet!

Tree City USA Award
In conjunction with the Earth Arbor Day celebrations, the City will be celebrating its 21st Annual Arbor Day. During the celebration the City will be recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation and receive its 20th consecutive Tree City USA award. The Tree City USA program is conducted by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. The awards program is designed to recognize communities that effectively manage their public tree resources, and to encourage the implementation of community tree management.

This year’s event will offer 1000 free trees to the public and 1000 free bags of composted mulch. In addition there will be volunteer tree planting opportunities for all ages. Close to fifty new trees will be planted throughout the Newhall Park area, including several at the surrounding schools. This is an opportunity for community members to help plant trees to offset the effects of global warming and to improve our air quality.
