ORGANICS

Why did organics recycling become a required service? And is it only for residents?

Organics recycling is part of a state law (Senate Bill 1383) to reduce waste going to the landfills. Food waste going to landfills creates methane and contributes to climate change.

  • Residential:  place any food waste at home into a plastic bag, then drop it into the green bin with your yard waste. This includes food scraps, uneaten leftovers, fruit and vegetables peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, and food soiled paper. This will be taken, by Burrtec, to a processing facility that will make it into mulch or compost.
  • Commercial/Multi-Family: if you don’t already have a food waste recycling program, you will need to begin separating food scraps, spoiled foods, uneaten post-consumer foods, fruit and vegetables peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, and food soiled paper for recycling. If you produce green waste (or yard waste) onsite, you will also need to recycle the yard waste as part of the organics program.

Why does my food waste need to be bagged separately than my yard waste?

In order to process food waste correctly, it will need to be bagged separately from your yard waste but still placed within the same green organics cart. Food waste will be de-bagged when it reaches the processing facility. Please keep in mind that any plastic bag that can be secured shut may be used to separate food waste including plastic bread bags, produce bags and plastic grocery bags.

I already compost at home, do I have to participate in the new food recycling program?

We are happy to hear that you have composting set up in your home! Please feel free to continue using the system that you have in place but keep in mind that many home composting systems are limited to the materials that can be processed. The food recycling program is a great way to supplement your current composting system in order to properly dispose of nearly all types of food waste, including cooked meats and seafood as well as all food soiled paper.
