FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION

When will Burrtec start serving all of Santa Clarita?

The new service began July 1, 2023 with Burrtec servicing all existing carts and bins.

When can I expect to receive information regarding the new Burrtec services?

Burrtec mailed household specific postcards for residents to update their choice of carts or bins for their household by June 15, 2023. Prior to your residents’ cart transition, you will receive information via doorhanger for what to expect and your new carts will be delivered with a packet of informational material and guides. For additional information, please visit Burrtec.com/scv or call Burrtec at (661) 222-2249. Additional information will be provided through various methods including the City’s website, social media, hauler newsletters, direct mail, door hangers, press releases, public meetings and more. Please follow @GreenSantaClarita on Facebook or visit city.sc/social for more options.

Why is Waste Management no longer our waste hauler?

The current agreement with Waste Management expired on June 30, 2023. The City conducted a competitive bid process for waste services and Burrtec was the successful hauler in the process.

Why can’t I choose my own hauler?

The City uses an exclusive waste hauler contract so that we can hold the hauler accountable, limit the number of trucks on city streets and create less confusion for residents.

How will I know when I need to start paying Burrtec instead of Waste Management?

Waste Management sent a final bill that covered services through June 30, 2023 and Burrtec sent a new bill on July 3, 2023 for services that began on July 1, 2023.

Will Waste Management customers automatically have their accounts and online payment information switched over?

Customer accounts have automatically been set-up with Burrtec, for anyone that previously had a Waste Management account. Online payment or automatic payment information will need to be updated for each resident that wishes to have those services with their new Burrtec account.

What is Burrtec's Holiday schedule?

Burrtec observes the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

When a holiday falls on a weekday, service will be delayed by one day.
Please reference your service area for possible exceptions.

There is no service interruption or delay when the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday

CARTS/BINS

What if I want different size bins or carts?

Burrtec provided a mailer with survey option for residents to change cart sizes prior to the transition. If you were unable to submit your preferences, you can contact Burrtec Customer Service to modify your carts sizes (or change your service level if a Multi-Family or Business) at any time by calling (661) 222-2249. Any requests for different cart sizes or additional carts not received by June 15 will be handled after the citywide cart exchange is finalized in September 2023.

How and when will I receive the new bins or carts from Burrtec?

Burrtec has a comprehensive cart swap plan in place that began on July 1, 2023 and will take place over several weeks. Residents will automatically receive new Burrtec carts before the old Waste Management carts are removed and Burrtec will continue to service old carts until you receive your new ones. To view the Burrtec cart delivery schedule interactive map, please visit burrtecsc.fleetgeniusmaps.com.

What if I am on vacation during my scheduled cart delivery day?

If, after checking Burrtec’s cart delivery schedule, you realize you will be on vacation or otherwise unavailable to place your old carts out during your scheduled day of delivery, please contact Burrtec at (661) 222-2249.

Can Waste Management customers keep their old trash carts?

No, all old Waste Management carts and bins will need to be returned and/or exchanged.

Low Income Discount Application

For questions, please call Burrtec at (661) 222-2249.

Why did the rate increase?

First, disposal costs have increased significantly over the past few years. In addition, the new rate includes enhanced services such as state mandated organics recycling, carpet recycling, food waste pails, composting kits, bulky cardboard collection, document shredding events and a local customer service center to effectively handle local calls. The City conducted a competitive bid process for waste services and Burrtec was the successful hauler in the process with the lowest proposed rates.

Will Burrtec honor the same annual prepayment discount program as Waste Management?

Yes, Burrtec will honor the annual prepayment discount program where customers can pay in advance for 11 months of service (at the approved rate in January of each year) and receive the 12th month free. Burrtec customers must request to be a part of this program and provide prepayment during the first payment period of each calendar year, beginning in January 2024. The program will run from January to December each year, with credit provided for the month of December specifically.

If I prepaid for service with Waste Management past June 30, 2023, will I receive a refund?

Yes, Waste Management will be providing refunds for all customers that prepaid for service past the end of their contract. Please expect a processing time for all refunds. If you do not receive a refund or correspondence from Waste Management by October 2023, please reach out to their customer service for help at (661) 259-2398.

Do I need to cancel my automatic payments (auto-pay) with Waste Management?

You do not need to cancel your auto-pay with Waste Management but the option to cancel is available if preferred. Automatic payments are only processed when prompted with an invoice. As long as your payments are up-to-date, and your final payment has been made, you will no longer be billed using your auto-pay with Waste Management. If you would like to utilize auto-pay for future billing, you will need to setup the auto-pay feature in your Burrtec account by visiting Burrtec.com/scv.

ORGANICS

What does the new organics recycling service mean for residents?

Organics recycling is part of a state law (Senate Bill 1383) to reduce waste going to the landfills.

  • Residential: that means you will start to place any food waste at home into a plastic bag, then drop it into the green bin with your yard waste. This includes food scraps, uneaten leftovers, fruit and vegetables peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, and food soiled paper. This will be taken, by Burrtec, to a processing facility that will make it into mulch or compost.
  • Commercial/Multi-Family: that means if you don’t already have a food waste recycling program, you will be receiving a food waste bin to separate food scraps, spoiled foods, uneaten post-consumer foods, fruit and vegetables peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, and food soiled paper for recycling. If you produce green waste (or yard waste) onsite, you will also need to recycle the yard waste as part of the organics program.

Why does my food waste need to be bagged separately than my yard waste?

In order to process food waste correctly, it will need to be bagged separately from your yard waste but still placed within the same green organics cart. Food waste will be de-bagged when it reaches the processing facility. Please keep in mind that any plastic bag that can be secured shut may be used to separate food waste including plastic bread bags, produce bags and plastic grocery bags. This process may change in the future if facilities become available that have the ability to process food waste and green waste together. Residents will be notified of any changes to the process.

I already compost at home, do I have to participate in the new food recycling program?

We are happy to hear that you have composting set up in your home! Please feel free to continue using the system that you have in place but keep in mind that many home composting systems are limited to the materials that can be processed. The new food recycling program is a great way to supplement your current composting system in order to properly dispose of nearly all types of food waste, including cooked meats and seafood as well as all food soiled paper.

I currently have unlimited horse manure service. Will there be any change there?

No, horse manure will still be serviced at the same level you are used to.

BULKY ITEM

Will Burrtec still take my bulky items for disposal?

Yes, effective July 1, 2023 Burrtec will take bulky items for free at their local facility and will schedule a free curbside pick up if contacted at least 48 hours prior to next collection day. Residents are allowed four bulky item pick-ups per year, with up to three items per pick-up.

What new services are included with my new account from Burrtec?
